Contemplative Advent? Whatevs.

Greetings! I'm sure you are beginning to think about what to get me for Christmas, right? Well, I got something for you! If you are viewing this on the FPC Website, then there is a document attached that you can download that has all of our Advent Worship Services as well as some resources to help you prepare for the celebration of Christmas! Just what you wanted? I know, RIGHT? Well, if you are worried about what to give me, first off – nothing. The Worship books contain material owned by others and used under the Creative Commons Liscence. Nothing is for sale, because it isn't all mine to sell. If you use it to worship God, then that's a good thing.

So, have a Contemplative Advent, a Mery Christmas, and a Happy New Year!
Zach

books?

Hi friends (and family)! I'm in the process of editing my old sermons and publishing a book that can be ordered on line. I also have a book of poetry that I wrote in seminary that I may consider publishing as well. Family members already have a copy. Just wanted to throw that out there in case any are interested. If you are interested, please post a comment in response to let me know. I'm going to do it just to get it done. I do not expect it to sell. Hearing that some folks are actually interested in the project might motivate me to get it done more quickly, though! Peace, Zach

I Am Legend

I've been waiting for this movie to come out on video for some time now. I don't see movies as much as I used to, but this is one I've been waiting for. Fortunately I got to see it on a home theater system. This film is definitely enhanced by larger viewing real estate and surround sound. If you aren't familiar with it, a genetically engineered virus has mutated humanity into vampire/zombie types. Dr. Robert Neville (Will Smith) is one of the last living humans, and he is working on the cure. It's based on the novel with the same title by Ricard Mathison . There are a few things of interest from the film theologically. Actually there are a ton. The relevance of human contact, concepts of God, the position of hope in human suffering, the expectation of sacrifice upon those who feel compelled to challenge the root causes of suffering, and the significance of community are just a few. Without spoiling the film, I'll just say a thing or two about God's...

Do You Have The Time

Isaiah 2:1-5       Romans 13:11-14     Matthew 24:36-44 “Do you have the time To listen to me whine About nothing and everything All at once” So begins the song, Basket Case , released by the band Green Day in 1994. They were one of many voices in pre-September 11 America that lamented the loss of value and meaning in our culture. One might even call them somewhat prophetic if you consider the function of a prophet as speaking the uncomfortable truth that we do not want to see or hear. I must admit that sometimes I feel like the task of preaching to a disinterested world and the discussions of becoming a church that is sensitive to every need, leave me feeling like we might be whining about everything and nothing, all at once. Either that or maybe we are like Bugs Bunny in that old cartoon when he comes up in a forest full of creatures, fleeing from the Tasmanian Devil trying to get someone to stop and tell him what is going on! We surfa...
